Overthinking

Here is my dilemma:

I LOVE the t.v. show Scrubs.  LOVE IT.

I'm no superman.
I have all the seasons on DVD and watch it when I'm sick, on an unending loop. It makes me feel better.  I've also taken to watching it to fall asleep for the past couple of weeks, because I've been stressed out and cranky. [No. That is NOT my usual mode of existence. Shut it.]  It soothes me.

My problem is this - a lot of the humor between JD & Turk [easily the best screen couple ever] [except maybe Nick & Nora Charles] [or Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant] [whatever, they're awesome]

ANYWAY,

a lot of the humor is about how close JD & Turk are and how Turk, particularly, worries that they seem too gay.
How awesome are they? AWESOME!
Even though it's just Guy Love, between two guys.

I'm no fan of homophobia, but I love this show and think it does a great job at beings smart and funny [two of my favorite things], so I don't know if I'm reading too much into this or what.  Maybe I'm just tired.  I don't want to stop watching it, but I'm tired of feeling that conflict, that I'm watching something offensive.  I'm not offended.  But maybe somebody might be?  Is that crazy?

Am I insane?  Probably.

  1. it's so hard to tell in culture these days when people are being sarcastic and when they're being satirical. i always felt the JD-and-turk gags were supposed to satirize both the super-close male friendships on old TV shows with an "are they or aren't they?" subtexts, as well as homophobia in general. but they cut awfully close to that line between snark and slurs...

  2. As a queermosexual, I LOVE that song and scene. I don't think it's homophobic - for the most part their only concern in being seen gay is that it's not actually true, not some need to prove their hetero-male-ness.

    It's good clean fun

  3. I think it's just that they have the kind of friendship that females have - which is why they are a bit paranoid about it. I'm jealous of it, personally - I wish I had a friend that close to me.

  4. My daughter, the militant co-president of the campus Gay/Straight Alliance, totally loves that song. Turk and JD often seem to have dialogue that sounds like spouses arguing, so I think it was meant to play on that. Want to see a great movie? Happy, Texas with William Macy, Jeremy Northam, and Steve Zahn. Northanm and Zahn's characters have a scene that reminds me of JD and Turk, but the whole flick is awesome.

  5. I think they're actually poking fun at the fact that in today's society 2 men can't be seen as that close without people thinking they're gay, which, really shouldn't matter in the first place.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE SCRUBS!! One of the best shows of all times! Right up there with M.A.S.H. and Fawlty Towers!
