Ah, the good old days.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

St. Patrick's Day is one of those holidays that holds a special place in my heart. Part of it is my enjoyment of corned beef and my love for cabbage. Part of it is that it's a sign of Spring. Part of it is the balls-out nuttiness of drunk people getting their green on.

Ah, to be young and drunk in the Springtime. I do miss it.

When I was 18, my friend and I had my sister drop us off at 7am at the dive-iest, sketchiest, awesomest bar for St. Patrick's Day.

How sketch? It was located on the service drive of a freeway, kitty corner from public housing. But! It served our underaged asses, so we were regulars.

KIDS! DON'T DRINK UNDERAGE! IT IS BAD AND BAD FOR YOU! NO GOOD WILL COME OF IT!*

Anyway, we ended up having tequila and Lucky Charms for breakfast, and then so much beer. So. Much. Beer. I remember a band, and possibly beads, and making new friends in a super crowded booth. There was a panicky moment when some cops showed up, but they were getting their drink on and ignored the dumb girls getting plastered. We were not regular day drunks, the kind who sit at the bar, huddled over their whiskey and beer.  We were loud and completely obnoxious. Maybe we sang along to songs we didn't know the words to. Probably we danced. We were celebrating!

I celebrated so much, a friend of ours ended up driving me home about mid-day, when he had to go to class. In return for being a good Samaritan, I puked all over the side of his car. I don't think I even paid for him to wash it. Several years later, we ended up having sex, so I think it all evened out in the end.

So, yeah. I miss being young and dumb and celebrating St. Patrick's Day. The husband and I may go out for a drink, but I'll probably have Perrier, since a couple of sips of Guinness now is all it takes for me to feel drunk, and I've got stuff to do, you know?

Mostly, I don't want to puke on my car.

  4. Haha, the part about several years later cracked me up lol... and as for me, i don't exactly enjoy St Patrick's day as it seems to have lost a lot of what it originally meant, which im sure it was not always getting drunk.
